Neil Horman dc5a144991 sis900: Allocate rx replacement buffer before rx operation
Just found a hole in my last patch. It was reported to me that shortly after we
integrated this patch. The report was of an oops that took place inside of
netif_rx when using the sis900 driver. Looking at my origional patch I noted
that there was a spot between the new skb_alloc and the refill_rx_ring label
where skb got reassigned to the pointer currently held in the rx_ring for the
purposes of receiveing the frame. The result of this is however that the buffer
that gets passed to netif_rx (if it is called), then gets placed right back into
the rx_ring. So if you receive frames fast enough the skb being processed by
the network stack can get corrupted. The reporter is testing out the fix I've
written for this below (I'm not near my hardware at the moment to test myself),
but I wanted to post it for review ASAP. I'll post test results when I hear
them, but I think this is a pretty straightforward fix. It just uses a separate
pointer to do the rx operation, so that we don't improperly reassign the pointer
that we use to refill the rx ring.

Neil Horman 95c385b4d5 [IPV6] ADDRCONF: Optimistic Duplicate Address Detection (RFC 4429) Support.
Nominally an autoconfigured IPv6 address is added to an interface in the
Tentative state (as per RFC 2462). Addresses in this state remain in this
state while the Duplicate Address Detection process operates on them to
determine their uniqueness on the network. During this period, these
tentative addresses may not be used for communication, increasing the time
before a node may be able to communicate on a network. Using Optimistic
Duplicate Address Detection, autoconfigured addresses may be used
immediately for communication on the network, as long as certain rules are
followed to avoid conflicts with other nodes during the Duplicate Address
Detection process.

Neil Horman b748d9e3b8 sis900: Allocate rx replacement buffer before rx operation
The sis900 driver appears to have a bug in which the receive routine
passes the skbuff holding the received frame to the network stack before
refilling the buffer in the rx ring. If a new skbuff cannot be allocated, the
driver simply leaves a hole in the rx ring, which causes the driver to stop
receiving frames and become non-recoverable without an rmmod/insmod according to
reporters. This patch reverses that order, attempting to allocate a replacement
buffer first, and receiving the new frame only if one can be allocated. If no
skbuff can be allocated, the current skbuf in the rx ring is recycled, dropping
the current frame, but keeping the NIC operational.

Neil Horman 47bbec0282 [NETPOLL]: make arp replies through netpoll use mac address of sender
Back in 2.4 arp requests that were recevied by netpoll were processed
in netconsole_receive_skb, where they were responded to using the src
mac of the request sender. In the 2.6 kernel arp_reply is responsible
for this function, but instead of using the src mac address of the
incomming request, the stored mac address that was registered for the
netconsole application is used. While this is usually ok, it can lead
to failures in netpoll in some situations (specifically situations
where a network may have two gateways, as arp requests from one may be
responded to using the mac address of the other). This patch reverts
the behavior to what we had in 2.4, in which all arp requests are sent
back using the src address of the request sender.

Neil Horman 5d469ec0f4 [PATCH] Correct misc_register return code handling in several drivers
Clean up several code points in which the return code from misc_register is
not handled properly.

Several modules failed to deregister various hooks when misc_register fails,
and this patch cleans them up. Also there are a few modules that legitimately
don't care about the failure status of misc register. These drivers however
unilaterally call misc_deregister on module unload.

Since misc_register doesn't initialize the list_head in the init_routine if it
fails, the deregister operation is at risk for oopsing when list_del is
called. The initial solution was to manually init the list in the miscdev
structure in each of those modules, but the consensus in this thread was to
consolodate and do that universally inside misc_register.

Neil Horman c94a62aae6 [PATCH] apm: clean up module initalization
Clean up module initalization for apm.c. I had started by auditing for
proper return code checks in misc_register, but I found that in the event
of an initalization failure, a proc file and a kernel thread were left
hanging out. this patch properly cleans up those loose ends on any
initalization failure.

Neil Horman 068c6e98bc [NET] netpoll: break recursive loop in netpoll rx path
The netpoll system currently has a rx to tx path via:

netpoll_rx
 __netpoll_rx
  arp_reply
   netpoll_send_skb
    dev->hard_start_tx

This rx->tx loop places network drivers at risk of inadvertently causing a
deadlock or BUG halt by recursively trying to acquire a spinlock that is
used in both their rx and tx paths (this problem was origionally reported
to me in the 3c59x driver, which shares a spinlock between the
boomerang_interrupt and boomerang_start_xmit routines).

This patch breaks this loop, by queueing arp frames, so that they can be
responded to after all receive operations have been completed. Tested by
myself and the reported with successful results.

Specifically it was tested with netdump. Heres the BZ with details:

Neil Horman d5b9f4c083 [SCTP]: Fix persistent slowdown in sctp when a gap ack consumes rx buffer.
In the event that our entire receive buffer is full with a series of
chunks that represent a single gap-ack, and then we accept a chunk
(or chunks) that fill in the gap between the ctsn and the first gap,
we renege chunks from the end of the buffer, which effectively does
nothing but move our gap to the end of our received tsn stream. This
does little but move our missing tsns down stream a little, and, if the
sender is sending sufficiently large retransmit frames, the result is a
perpetual slowdown which can never be recovered from, since the only
chunk that can be accepted to allow progress in the tsn stream necessitates
that a new gap be created to make room for it. This leads to a constant
need for retransmits, and subsequent receiver stalls. The fix I've come up
with is to deliver the frame without reneging if we have a full receive
buffer and the receiving sockets sk_receive_queue is empty(indicating that
the receive buffer is being blocked by a missing tsn).

Neil Horman 7c3ceb4fb9 [SCTP]: Allow spillover of receive buffer to avoid deadlock.
This patch fixes a deadlock situation in the receive path by allowing
temporary spillover of the receive buffer.

- If the chunk we receive has a tsn that immediately follows the ctsn,
accept it even if we run out of receive buffer space and renege data with
  higher TSNs.
- Once we accept one chunk in a packet, accept all the remaining chunks
even if we run out of receive buffer space.
