john stultz 187226f57f futex_unlock_pi() hurts my brain and may cause application deadlock
Avoid futex_unlock_pi returning -EFAULT (which results in deadlock), by
clearing uval before jumping to retry_locked.

john stultz 17c38b7490 Cache xtime every call to update_wall_time
This avoids xtime lag seen with dynticks, because while 'xtime' itself
is still not updated often, we keep a 'xtime_cache' variable around that
contains the approximate real-time that _is_ updated each time we do a
'update_wall_time()', and is thus never off by more than one tick.

IOW, this restores the original semantics for 'xtime' users, as long as
you use the proper abstraction functions (ie 'current_kernel_time()' or
'get_seconds()' depending on whether you want a timespec or just the
seconds field).

[ Updated Patch. As penance for my sins I've also yanked another #ifdef
that was added to avoid the xtime lag w/ hrtimers. ]

john stultz 2c6b47de17 Cleanup non-arch xtime uses, use get_seconds() or current_kernel_time().
This avoids use of the kernel-internal "xtime" variable directly outside
of the actual time-related functions. Instead, use the helper functions
that we already have available to us.

This doesn't actually change any behaviour, but this will allow us to
fix the fact that "xtime" isn't updated very often with CONFIG_NO_HZ
(because much of the realtime information is maintained as separate
offsets to 'xtime'), which has caused interfaces that use xtime directly
to get a time that is out of sync with the real-time clock by up to a
third of a second or so.

john stultz 3704540b48 tick management: spread timer interrupt
After discussing w/ Thomas over IRC, it seems the issue is the sched tick
fires on every cpu at the same time, causing extra lock contention.

This smaller change, adds an extra offset per cpu so the ticks don't line up.
This patch also drops the idle latency from 40us down to under 20us.

john stultz d0aff6e6f4 x86_64: vsyscall time() fix
The vsyscall time() function basically returns the second portion of
xtime directly. This however means that there is about a ticks worth of
time each second where time() will return a second value less then what
gettimeofday() does.

Additionally, this window where vtime() is behind vgettimeofday() grows
when dynticks is enabled, so its probably good to get this in before
dynticks lands.

Big thanks to Sripathi for noticing this issue and creating a test case
to work with!

This patch changes the vtime() implemenation to call vgettimeofday(),
much as syscall time() implementation calls gettimeofday().

Change mark_tsc_unstable() so it takes a string argument, which holds the
reason the TSC was marked unstable.

This is then displayed the first time mark_tsc_unstable is called.

This should help us better debug why the TSC was marked unstable on certain

john stultz 98de9e3ba2 [PATCH] fix jiffies clocksource inittime
In debugging a problem w/ the -rt tree, I noticed that on systems that mark
the tsc as unstable before it is registered, the TSC would still be
selected and used for a short period of time. Digging in it looks to be a
result of the mix of the clocksource list changes and my clocksource
initialization changes.

With the -rt tree, using a bad TSC, even for a short period of time can
results in a hang at boot. I was not able to reproduce this hang w/
mainline, but I'm not completely certain that someone won't trip on it.

This patch resolves the issue by initializing the jiffies clocksource
earlier so a bad TSC won't get selected just because nothing else is yet
registered.

john stultz 1ff100d76f [PATCH] correct slow acpi_pm rating
On Bob's machine clocksource is selecting PIT over the ACPI PM timer,
because he has the PIIX4 bug. That bug drops the ACPI PM timers rating
to the same as the PIT, so that's why you're getting the PIT.

Realistically, the PIT is much slower then even the triple read ACPI PM,
so the de-ranking code is probably dropping it too far.

So don't drop ACPI PM quite so low if we see the PIIX4 bug.

john stultz 6bb74df481 [PATCH] clocksource init adjustments (fix bug #7426)
This patch resolves the issue found here:
http://bugme.osdl.org/show_bug.cgi?id=7426

The basic summary is:
Currently we register most of i386/x86_64 clocksources at module_init
time. Then we enable clocksource selection at late_initcall time. This
causes some problems for drivers that use gettimeofday for init
calibration routines (specifically the es1968 driver in this case),
where durring module_init, the only clocksource available is the low-res
jiffies clocksource. This may cause slight calibration errors, due to
the small sampling time used.

It should be noted that drivers that require fine grained time may not
function on architectures that do not have better then jiffies
resolution timekeeping (there are a few). However, this does not
discount the reasonable need for such fine-grained timekeeping at init
time.

Thus the solution here is to register clocksources earlier (ideally when
the hardware is being initialized), and then we enable clocksource
selection at fs_initcall (before device_initcall).

This patch should probably get some testing time in -mm, since
clocksource selection is one of the most important issues for correct
timekeeping, and I've only been able to test this on a few of my own
boxes.

john stultz 3f4a0b917c [PATCH] i386 Time: Avoid PIT SMP lockups
Avoid possible PIT livelock issues seen on SMP systems (and reported by
Andi), by not allowing it as a clocksource on SMP boxes.

However, since the PIT may no longer be present, we have to properly handle
the cases where SMP systems have TSC skew and fall back from the TSC.
Since the PIT isn't there, it would "fall back" to the TSC again. So this
changes the jiffies rating to 1, and the TSC-bad rating value to 0.

Thus you will get the following behavior priority on i386 systems:

tsc [if present & stable]
hpet [if present]
cyclone [if present]
acpi_pm [if present]
pit [if UP]
jiffies

Rather then the current more complicated:
tsc [if present & stable]
hpet [if present]
cyclone [if present]
acpi_pm [if present]
pit [if cpus < 4]
tsc [if present & unstable]

john stultz e579dcbf23 [PATCH] futex_handle_fault always fails
We found this issue last week w/ the -RT kernel, but it seems the same
issue is in mainline as well.

Basically it is possible for futex_unlock_pi to return without actually
freeing the lock. This is due to buggy logic in the use of
futex_handle_fault() and its attempt argument in a failure case.

Looking at futex.c the logic is as follows:

1) In futex_unlock_pi() we start w/ ret=0 and we go down to the first
futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inatomic(), where we find uval==-EFAULT. We then
   jump to the pi_faulted label.

2) From pi_faulted: We increment attempt, unlock the sem and hit the
   retry label.

3) From the retry label, with ret still zero, we again hit EFAULT on the
first futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inatomic(), and again goto the pi_faulted
   label.

4) Again from pi_faulted: we increment attempt and enter the
   conditional, where we call futex_handle_fault.

5) futex_handle_fault fails, and we goto the out_unlock_release_sem
   label.

6) From out_unlock_release_sem we return, and since ret is still zero,
we return without error, while never actually unlocking the lock.

Issue #1: at the first futex_atomic_cmpxchg_inatomic() we should probably
be setting ret=-EFAULT before jumping to pi_faulted: However in our case
this doesn't really affect anything, as the glibc we're using ignores the
error value from futex_unlock_pi().

Issue #2: Look at futex_handle_fault(), its first conditional will return
-EFAULT if attempt is >= 2. However, from the "if(attempt++)
futex_handle_fault(attempt)" logic above, we'll *never* call
futex_handle_fault when attempt is less then two. So we never get a chance
to even try to fault the page in.

The following patch addresses these two issues by 1) Always setting ret to
-EFAULT if futex_handle_fault fails, and 2) Removing the = in
futex_handle_fault's (attempt >= 2) check.

I'm really not sure this is the right fix, but wanted to bring it up so
folks knew the issue is alive and well in the current -git tree. From
looking at the git logs the logic was first introduced (then later copied
to other places) in the following commit almost a year ago:

http://www.kernel.org/git/?p=linux/kernel/git/torvalds/linux-2.6.git;a=commitdiff;h=4732efbeb997189d9f9b04708dc26bf8613ed721;hp=5b039e681b8c5f30aac9cc04385cc94be45d0823

We're not reay to take a timer interrupt until timekeeping_init() has run.

We don't know _why_ local interrupts got enabled on Jesse Brandeburg's

john stultz 61743fe445 [PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 4: Remove Old timer_opts Code
Remove the old timers/timer_opts infrastructure which has been disabled. It
is a fairly straightforward set of deletions

Note that this does not provide any i386 clocksources, so you will only have
the jiffies clocksource. To get full replacements for the code being removed
here, the timeofday-clocks-i386 patch will be needed.

john stultz 6f84fa2f3e [PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 3: Enable Generic Timekeeping
This converts the i386 arch to use the generic timeofday subsystem. It
enabled the GENERIC_TIME option, disables the timer_opts code and other arch
specific timekeeping code and reworks the delay code.

While this patch enables the generic timekeeping, please note that this patch
does not provide any i386 clocksource. Thus only the jiffies clocksource will
be available. To get full replacements for the code being disabled here, the
timeofday-clocks-i386 patch will needed.

john stultz 539eb11e6e [PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 2: Rework TSC Support
As part of the i386 conversion to the generic timekeeping infrastructure, this
introduces a new tsc.c file. The code in this file replaces the TSC
initialization, management and access code currently in timer_tsc.c (which
will be removed) that we want to preserve.

The code also introduces the following functionality:

o tsc_khz: like cpu_khz but stores the TSC frequency on systems that do not
change TSC frequency w/ CPU frequency

o check/mark_tsc_unstable: accessor/modifier flag for TSC timekeeping
  usability

o minor cleanups to calibration math.

This patch also includes a one line __cpuinitdata fix from Zwane Mwaikambo.

john stultz 8d016ef138 [PATCH] Time: i386 Conversion - part 1: Move timer_pit.c to i8253.c
A simple cleanup for the i386 arch in preparation of moving to the generic
timeofday infrastructure. It simply moves the PIT initialization code, locks,
and other code we want to keep from some code from timer_pit.c (which will be
removed) to i8253.c.

john stultz 5eb6d20533 [PATCH] Time: Use clocksource abstraction for NTP adjustments
Instead of incrementing xtime by tick_nsec + ntp adjustments, use the
clocksource abstraction to increment and scale time. Using the clocksource
abstraction allows other clocksources to be used consistently in the face of
late or lost ticks, while preserving the existing behavior via the jiffies
clocksource.

This removes the need to keep time_phase adjustments as we just use the
current_tick_length() function as the NTP interface and accumulate time using
shifted nanoseconds.

The basics of this design was by Roman Zippel, however it is my own
interpretation and implementation, so the credit should go to him and the
blame to me.

john stultz 260a42309b [PATCH] Time: Let user request precision from current_tick_length()
Change the current_tick_length() function so it takes an argument which
specifies how much precision to return in shifted nanoseconds. This provides
a simple way to convert between NTPs internal nanoseconds shifted by
(SHIFT_SCALE - 10) to other shifted nanosecond units that are used by the
clocksource abstraction.

john stultz ad596171ed [PATCH] Time: Use clocksource infrastructure for update_wall_time
Modify the update_wall_time function so it increments time using the
clocksource abstraction instead of jiffies. Since the only clocksource driver
currently provided is the jiffies clocksource, this should result in no
functional change. Additionally, a timekeeping_init and timekeeping_resume
function has been added to initialize and maintain some of the new timekeping
state.

john stultz 734efb467b [PATCH] Time: Clocksource Infrastructure
This introduces the clocksource management infrastructure. A clocksource is a
driver-like architecture generic abstraction of a free-running counter. This
code defines the clocksource structure, and provides management code for
registering, selecting, accessing and scaling clocksources.

Additionally, this includes the trivial jiffies clocksource, a lowest common
denominator clocksource, provided mainly for use as an example.

john stultz bfaa1deeb9 [PATCH] disable lost tick compensation before TSCs are synced
Avoid lost tick compensation early in boot before the TSCs are
synchronized. Currently timekeeping is enabled before the TSCs are
synchronized, thus when the TSCs are synched (reset to zero), it appears
that a number of lost ticks have occurred. This can cause premature expiry
of timers and in extreme cases can cause the soft lockup detection to fire.

This resolves issues reported by Andy Whitcroft as well as bug #5366
reported by Tim Mann.

john stultz fd4954714e [PATCH] x86_64: Fix collision between pmtimer and pit/hpet
On systems that do not support the HPET legacy functions (basically the IBM
x460, but there could be others), in time_init() we accidentally fall into a
PM timer conditional and set the vxtime_hz value to the PM timer's frequency.
We then use this value with the HPET for timekeeping.

This patch (which mimics the behavior in time_init_gtod) corrects the
collision.

john stultz 1bb34a4127 [PATCH] NTP shift_right cleanup
Create a macro shift_right() that avoids the numerous ugly conditionals in the
NTP code that look like:

        if(a < 0)
                b = -(-a >> shift);
        else
                b = a >> shift;

Replacing it with:

        b = shift_right(a, shift);

This should have zero effect on the logic, however it should probably have
a bit of testing just to be sure.

Also replace open-coded min/max with the macros.

john stultz 6c132b5fe6 [PATCH] x86-64: Fix bad assumption that dualcore cpus have synced TSCs
This should resolve the issue seen in bugme bug #5105, where it is assumed
that dualcore x86_64 systems have synced TSCs. This is not the case, and
alternate timesources should be used instead.

For more details, see:
http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=5105

Andi's earlier concerns that the TSCs should be synced on dualcore systems
have been resolved by confirmation from AMD folks that they can be
unsynced.

variables by adding two helper inline functions:

ntp_clear(): Clears the ntp state variables

ntp_synced(): Returns 1 if the system is synced with a time server.

john stultz f326d22b8c [PATCH] ppc32: stop misusing NTP's time_offset value
As part of my timeofday rework, I've been looking at the NTP code and I
noticed that the PPC architecture is apparently misusing the NTP's
time_offset (it is a terrible name!) value as some form of timezone offset.

This could cause problems when time_offset changed by the NTP code. This
patch changes the PPC code so it uses a more clear local variable:
timezone_offset.

john stultz a3a00751ad [PATCH] x86_64: fix hpet for systems that don't support legacy replacement
Currently the x86-64 HPET code assumes the entire HPET implementation from
the spec is present. This breaks on boxes that do not implement the
optional legacy timer replacement functionality portion of the spec.

This patch fixes this issue, allowing x86-64 systems that cannot use the
HPET for the timer interrupt and RTC to still use the HPET as a time
source. I've tested this patch on a system systems without HPET, with HPET
but without legacy timer replacement, as well as HPET with legacy timer
replacement.

This version adds a minor check to cap the HPET counter value in
gettimeoffset_hpet to avoid possible time inconsistencies. Please ignore
the A2 version I sent to you earlier.
