The kernel currently provides no functionality to analyze the RSS and swap
space usage of each individual sysvipc shared memory segment.
This patch adds this info for each existing shm segment by extending the
output of /proc/sysvipc/shm by two columns for RSS and swap.
Since shmctl(SHM_INFO) already provides a similiar calculation (it
currently sums up all RSS/swap info for all segments), I did split out a
static function which is now used by the /proc/sysvipc/shm output and
shmctl(SHM_INFO).
SAP products (esp. the SAP Netweaver ABAP Kernel) uses lots of big shared
memory segments (we often have Linux systems with >= 16GB shm usage).
Sometimes we get customer reports about "slow" system responses and while
looking into their configurations we often find massive swapping activity
on the system. With this patch it's now easy to see from the command line
if and which shm segments gets swapped out (and how much) and can more
easily give recommendations for system tuning. Without the patch it's
currently not possible to do such shm analysis at all.
Also...
Add some spaces in front of the "size" field for 64bit kernels to get the
columns correct if you cat the contents of the file. In
sysvipc_shm_proc_show() the kernel prints the size value in "SPEC_SIZE"
format, which is defined like this:
#if BITS_PER_LONG <= 32
#define SIZE_SPEC "%10lu"
#else
#define SIZE_SPEC "%21lu"
#endif
So, if the header is not adjusted, the columns are not correctly aligned.
I actually tested this on 32- and 64-bit and it seems correct now.

On the parisc architecture we face for each and every loaded kernel module
this kernel "badness warning":
sysfs: cannot create duplicate filename '/module/ac97_bus/sections/.text'
Badness at fs/sysfs/dir.c:487
Reason for that is, that on parisc all kernel modules do have multiple
.text sections due to the usage of the -ffunction-sections compiler flag
which is needed to reach all jump targets on this platform.
An objdump on such a kernel module gives:
Sections:
Idx Name Size VMA LMA File off Algn
0 .note.gnu.build-id 00000024 00000000 00000000 00000034 2**2

3 .text 00000000 00000000 00000000 000000d4 2**0

...
Since the .text sections are empty (size of 0 bytes) and won't be
loaded by the kernel module loader anyway, I don't see a reason
why such sections need to be listed under
/sys/module/<module_name>/sections/<section_name> either.
The attached patch does solve this issue by not exporting section
names which are empty.

This patch fixes a long outstanding bug on 32bit parisc linux kernels
which prevented us from using 32bit PTE table entries (instead of 64bit
entries of which 32bit were unused).
The problem was caused by this assembler statement in the L2_ptep
macro in arch/parisc/kernel/entry.S:447:
EXTR \va,31-ASM_PGDIR_SHIFT,ASM_BITS_PER_PGD,\index
which expanded to
extrw,u r8,9,11,r1
and which has undefined behavior since the length value (11) extends
beyond the leftmost bit (11-1 > 9).
Interestingly PA2.0 processors seem to don't care and just zero-extend
the value, while PA1.1 processors don't.
Fix this problem by detecting an address space overflow with ASM_BITS_PER_PGD
and adjusting it accordingly. To prevent such problems in the future,
some compile time sanity checks in arch/parisc/mm/init.c were added.
Since the page table now only consumes half of it's old size, we can
use the freed memory to harmonize 32- and 64bit kernels and let both
map 16MB for the initial page table.

On 32bit (and sometimes 64bit) and with big kernel modules like xfs or
ipv6 the relocation types R_PARISC_PCREL17F and R_PARISC_PCREL22F may
fail to reach their PLT stub if we only create one big stub array for
all sections at the beginning of the core or init section.
With this patch we now instead add individual PLT stub entries
directly in front of the code sections where the stubs are actually
called. This reduces the distance between the PCREL location and the
stub entry so that the relocations can be fulfilled.
While calculating the final layout of the kernel module in memory, the
kernel module loader calls arch_mod_section_prepend() to request the

Any user on existing parisc 32- and 64bit-kernels can easily crash
the kernel and as such enforce a DSO.
A simple testcase is available here:
http://gsyprf10.external.hp.com/~deller/crash.tgz
The problem is introduced by the fact, that the handle_interruption()
crash handler calls the show_regs() function, which in turn tries to
unwind the stack by calling parisc_show_stack(). Since the stack contains
userspace addresses, a try to unwind the stack is dangerous and useless
and leads to the crash.
The fix is trivial: For userspace processes
a) avoid to unwind the stack, and
b) avoid to resolve userspace addresses to kernel symbol names.
While touching this code, I converted print_symbol() to %pS
printk formats and made parisc_show_stack() static.
An initial patch for this was written by Kyle McMartin back in August:

The problem is that compat_arch_ptrace() enters with an addr value of
type compat_ulong_t and calls translate_usr_offset() to translate the
address offset into a struct pt_regs offset like this:
addr = translate_usr_offset(addr)
this means that any return value of translate_usr_offset() is stored
back as compat_ulong_t type into the addr variable.
But since translate_usr_offset() returns -1 for invalid offsets, addr
can now get the value 0xffffffff which then fails the next return-value
sanity check and thus the kernel tries to access invalid memory:
if (addr < 0)
break;
Fix this bug by modifying translate_usr_offset() to take and return
values of type compat_ulong_t, and by returning the value
"sizeof(struct pt_regs)" as an error indicator.
Additionally change the sanity check to check for return values
for >= sizeof(struct pt_regs).

graphic-card-BIOS patching to become supported. Since we don't have yet
implemented the patching, it's better to detect such cards in advance,
inform to the user that there are known problems and to not activate the
card.
Problematic GSC cards and BIOS versions are:
* Hyperdrive/Hyperbowl (A4071A) graphics card series:
* ID = 0x2BCB015A (Version 8.04/8)
* ID = 0x2BCB015A (Version 8.04/11)
* Thunder 1 VISUALIZE 48 card:
* ID = 0x2F23E5FC (Version 8.05/9)
* Thunder 2 VISUALIZE 48 XP card:
* ID = 0x2F8D570E (Version 8.05/12)
* Some Hyperion and ThunderHawk GSC cards

Add "no_hpsdc" kernel module option to the hp_sdc driver, so that
the driver can be instructed to not enable the HP SDC port.
This is useful on some older HPPA boxes with HIL keyboard
and HIL mouse where the new HP SDC HIL drivers don't work
yet. By disabling the new hp_sdc driver users are able to use
the older hilkbd driver instead.

Many mouse drivers are often compiled (e.g. in Linux distributions) into the
kernel at the same time just to make sure that at least one driver will suceed
in find it's mouse device. Nevertheless, only the inport and logitech busmouse
mouse drivers report with KERN_ERR log level if the mouse wasn't found. They
should use KERN_INFO instead, because it's not an error if the mouse isn't
attached at all.

Visualize-EG, Graffiti and A4450A graphics cards on PARISC can
be configured in double-buffer and standard mode, but the stifb
driver supports standard mode only.
This patch detects double-buffered cards more reliable.
It is a real bugfix for a very nasty problem for all parisc users which have
wrongly configured their graphic card. The problem: The stifb graphics driver
will not detect that the card is wrongly configured and then nevertheless just
enables the graphics mode, which it shouldn't. In the end, the user will see
no further updates / boot messages on the screen.
We had documented this problem already on our FAQ
(http://parisc-linux.org/faq/index.html#viseg "Why do I get corrupted graphics
with my Vis-EG/Graffiti/A4450A card?") but people still run into this problem.
So having this fix in as early as possible can help us.
