Surprisingly chown() on ext4 is not SMP scalable operation.
Due to unconditional orphan_del(NULL, inode) in ext4_setattr()
result in significant performance overhead because of global orphan
mutex, especially in no-journal mode (where orphan_add() is noop).
It is possible to skip explicit orphan_del if possible.

Reserved space must being claimed before remove_dquot_ref() for a
given inode. Filesystem is responsible for performing force blocks
allocation in case of dealloc in ->quota_off. Let's add sanity check

Generic per-cpu counter has some memory overhead but it is negligible for
modern systems and embedded systems compile without quota support. And code
reuse is a good thing. This patch should fix complain from preemptive kernels
which was introduced by dde9588853.

Quota must being initialized if size or uid/git changes requested.
But initialization performed in two different places:
in case of i_size file system is responsible for dquot init
, but in case of uid/gid init will be called internally in
dquot_transfer().
This ambiguity makes code harder to understand.
Let's move this logic to one common helper function.

Quota stats is mostly writable data structure. Let's alloc percpu
bucket for each value.
NOTE: dqstats_read() function is racy against dqstats_{inc,dec}
and may return inconsistent value. But this is ok since absolute
accuracy is not required.

Currently block/inode/dir counters are initialized before journal was
recovered. In fact after journal recovery this info will probably
change which results in incorrect numbers returned from statfs(2).

Filesystems with delalloc support may dirty inode during writepages.
As result inode will have dirty metadata flags even after write_inode.
In fact we have two dedicated functions for proper data and metadata
writeback. It is reasonable to separate flags updates in two stages.

At several places we modify EXT4_I(inode)->i_flags without holding
i_mutex (ext4_do_update_inode, ...). These modifications are racy and
we can lose updates to i_flags. So convert handling of i_flags to use
bitops which are atomic.

- Reorganize locking scheme to batch two atomic operation in to one.
This also allow us to state what healthy group must obey following rule
ext4_free_inodes_count(sb, gdp) == ext4_count_free(inode_bitmap, NUM);
- Fix possible undefined pointer dereference.
- Even if group descriptor stats aren't accessible we have to update
inode bitmaps.
- Move non-group members update out of group_lock.

The extents code will sometimes zero out blocks and mark them as
initialized instead of splitting an extent into several smaller ones.
This optimization however, causes problems if the extent is beyond
i_size because fsck will complain if there are uninitialized blocks
after i_size as this can not be distinguished from an inode that has
an incorrect i_size field.

with wrong value. This patch must be included in

We always assume what dquot update result in changes in one data block
But ext3_quota_write() function may handle cross block boundary writes
In fact if this ever happen it will result in incorrect journal credits
reservation. And later bug_on triggering. As soon this never happen the
boundary cross loop is NOOP. In order to make things straight
let's remove this loop and assert cross boundary condition.

Since we implemented generic reserved space management interface,
then it is possible to account reserved space even when quota
is not active (similar to i_blocks/i_bytes).
Without this patch following testcase result in massive comlain from
WARN_ON in dquot_claim_space()

In case of truncate errors we explicitly remove inode from in-core
orphan list via orphan_del(NULL, inode) without modifying the on-disk list.
But later on, the same inode may be inserted in the orphan list again
which will result the on-disk linked list getting corrupted. If inode
i_dtime contains valid value, then skip on-disk list modification.

We have to properly decrease bi_size in order to merge_bvec_fn return
right result. Otherwise this result in false merge rejects for two
absolutely valid bio_vecs. This may cause significant performance
penalty for example fs_block_size == 1k and block device is raid0 with
small chunk_size = 8k. Then it is impossible to merge 7-th fs-block in
to bio which already has 6 fs-blocks.

Currently inode_reservation is managed by fs itself and this
reservation is transfered on dquot_transfer(). This means what
inode_reservation must always be in sync with
dquot->dq_dqb.dqb_rsvspace. Otherwise dquot_transfer() will result
in incorrect quota(WARN_ON in dquot_claim_reserved_space() will be
triggered)
This is not easy because of complex locking order issues
for example http://bugzilla.kernel.org/show_bug.cgi?id=14739
The patch introduce quota reservation field for each fs-inode
(fs specific inode is used in order to prevent bloating generic
vfs inode). This reservation is managed by quota code internally
similar to i_blocks/i_bytes and may not be always in sync with
internal fs reservation.
Also perform some code rearrangement:
- Unify dquot_reserve_space() and dquot_reserve_space()
- Unify dquot_release_reserved_space() and dquot_free_space()
- Also this patch add missing warning update to release_rsv()
dquot_release_reserved_space() must call flush_warnings() as
dquot_free_space() does.

Inside ->setattr() call both ATTR_UID and ATTR_GID may be valid
This means that we may end-up with transferring all quotas. Add
we have to reserve QUOTA_DEL_BLOCKS for all quotas, as we do in

Currently on governer backup/restore path we storing governor's pointer.
This is wrong because one may unload governor's module after cpu goes
offline. As result use-after-free will take place on restored cpu.
It is not easy to exploit this bug, but still we have to close this
issue ASAP. Issue was introduced by following commit

In case of error extending write may have instantiated a few blocks
outside i_size. We need to trim these blocks. We have to do it
*regardless* to blocksize. At least ext2, ext3 and reiserfs interpret
(i_size < biggest block) condition as error. Fsck will complain about
wrong i_size. Then fsck will fix the error by changing i_size according
to the biggest block. This is bad because this blocks contain garbage
from previous write attempt. And result in data corruption.

On umount two event will be dispatched to watcher:
1: inotify_dev_queue_event(.., IN_UNMOUNT,..)
2: remove_watch(watch, dev)
->inotify_dev_queue_event(.., IN_IGNORED, ..)
But if watcher has IN_ONESHOT bit set then the watcher will be released
inside first event. Which result in accessing invalid object later. IMHO
it is not pure regression. This bug wasn't triggered while initial
inotify interface testing phase because of another bug in IN_ONESHOT
handling logic :)

This could help to find buggy drivers where request_irq return value wasn't
checked. There's just no reason to ignore errors which can and do occur.
Anyone who got warning during compilation have to realise what it is't
realy safe code.

- In fact we don't have to fail if AOP_TRUNCATED_PAGE was returned from
prepare_write or commit_write. It is beter to retry attempt where it
is possible.
- Rearange ecryptfs_get_lower_page() error handling logic, make it more clean.

If prepare_write or commit_write return AOP_TRUNCATED_PAGE we jump to
"retry" label and than if find_or_create_page() failed function return
incorrect error code.
