Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 91d248c3b9 tools arch x86: Sync the msr-index.h copy with the kernel sources
To pick up the changes from these csets:

  4ad3278df6 ("x86/speculation: Disable RRSBA behavior")
  d7caac991f ("x86/cpu/amd: Add Spectral Chicken")

That cause no changes to tooling:

  $ tools/perf/trace/beauty/tracepoints/x86_msr.sh > before
  $ cp arch/x86/include/asm/msr-index.h tools/arch/x86/include/asm/msr-index.h
  $ tools/perf/trace/beauty/tracepoints/x86_msr.sh > after
  $ diff -u before after
  $

Just silences this perf build warning:

  Warning: Kernel ABI header at 'tools/arch/x86/include/asm/msr-index.h' differs from latest version at 'arch/x86/include/asm/msr-index.h'
  diff -u tools/arch/x86/include/asm/msr-index.h arch/x86/include/asm/msr-index.h

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo eee51fe38e tools headers UAPI: Sync linux/kvm.h with the kernel sources
To pick the changes in:

  1b870fa557 ("kvm: stats: tell userspace which values are boolean")

That just rebuilds perf, as these patches don't add any new KVM ioctl to
be harvested for the the 'perf trace' ioctl syscall argument
beautifiers.

This is also by now used by tools/testing/selftests/kvm/, a simple test
build succeeded.

This silences this perf build warning:

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 7fe718fb8f tools headers UAPI: Sync linux/kvm.h with the kernel sources
To pick the changes in:

  bfbab44568 ("KVM: arm64: Implement PSCI SYSTEM_SUSPEND")
  7b33a09d03 ("KVM: arm64: Add support for userspace to suspend a vCPU")
  ffbb61d09f ("KVM: x86: Accept KVM_[GS]ET_TSC_KHZ as a VM ioctl.")
  661a20fab7 ("KVM: x86/xen: Advertise and document KVM_XEN_HVM_CONFIG_EVTCHN_SEND")
  fde0451be8 ("KVM: x86/xen: Support per-vCPU event channel upcall via local APIC")

  2fd6df2f2b ("KVM: x86/xen: intercept EVTCHNOP_send from guests")
  35025735a7 ("KVM: x86/xen: Support direct injection of event channel events")

That automatically adds support for this new ioctl:

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 3713e2494b perf trace beauty: Fix generation of errno id->str table on ALT Linux
For some reason using:

         cat <<EoFuncBegin
  static const char *errno_to_name__$arch(int err)
  {
         switch (err) {
  EoFuncBegin

In tools/perf/trace/beauty/arch_errno_names.sh isn't working on ALT
Linux sisyphus (development version), which could be some distro
specific glitch, so just get this done in an alternative way that works
everywhere while giving notice to the people working on that distro to
try and figure our what really took place.

Now one can trace systemwide asking to see backtraces to where those
MSRs are being read/written, see this example with a previous update:

  # perf trace -e msr:*_msr/max-stack=32/ --filter="msr>=IA32_U_CET && msr<=IA32_INT_SSP_TAB"
  ^C#

If we use -v (verbose mode) we can see what it does behind the scenes:

  # perf trace -v -e msr:*_msr/max-stack=32/ --filter="msr>=IA32_U_CET && msr<=IA32_INT_SSP_TAB"
  Using CPUID AuthenticAMD-25-21-0

Example with a frequent msr:

  # perf trace -v -e msr:*_msr/max-stack=32/ --filter="msr==IA32_SPEC_CTRL" --max-events 2

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo df76e00383 perf build: Stop using __weak bpf_map_create() to handle older libbpf versions
By adding a feature test for bpf_map_create() and providing a fallback if
it isn't present in older versions of libbpf.

This also fixes the build with torvalds/master at this point:

Coping with:

  $ git log --oneline -2 d16495a982
  d16495a982 libbpf: remove bpf_create_map*() APIs

As the __weak function fails to build as it calls the now removed
bpf_create_map() API.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 0ae065a5d2 perf build: Fix check for btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() in libbpf
Avi Kivity reported a problem where the __weak
btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() in tools/perf/util/bpf-event.c was being
used and it called btf__get_from_id() in tools/lib/bpf/btf.c that in
turn called back to btf__load_from_kernel_by_id(), resulting in an
endless loop.

Fix this by adding a feature test to check if
btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() is available when building perf with
LIBBPF_DYNAMIC=1, and if not then provide the fallback to the old
btf__get_from_id(), that doesn't call back to btf__load_from_kernel_by_id()
since at that time it didn't exist at all.

Tested on Fedora 35 where we have libbpf-devel 0.4.0 with LIBBPF_DYNAMIC
where we don't have btf__load_from_kernel_by_id() and thus its feature
test fail, not defining HAVE_LIBBPF_BTF__LOAD_FROM_KERNEL_BY_ID:

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo dd6e1fe91c perf python: Fix probing for some clang command line options
The clang compiler complains about some options even without a source
file being available, while others require one, so use the simple
tools/build/feature/test-hello.c file.

Then check for the "is not supported" string in its output, in addition
to the "unknown argument" already being looked for.

This was noticed when building with clang-13 where -ffat-lto-objects
isn't supported and since we were looking just for "unknown argument"
and not providing a source code to clang, was mistakenly assumed as
being available and not being filtered to set of command line options
provided to clang, leading to a build failure.

These make the feature check fail when using clang, so remove them just
like is done in tools/perf/Makefile.config to build perf itself.

Adding -Wno-compound-token-split-by-macro to tools/perf/Makefile.config
when building with clang is also necessary to avoid these warnings
turned into errors (-Werror):

acme> -Werror,-Wcompound-token-split-by-macro when building with clang?

Yes, I think that is probably the best solution. As far as I can tell,
at least in this file and context, the warning appears harmless, as the
"create a GNU C statement expression from two different macros" is very
much intentional, based on the presence of PERL_USE_GCC_BRACE_GROUPS.
The warning is fixed in upstream Perl by just avoiding creating GNU C
statement expressions using STMT_START and STMT_END:

  https://github.com/Perl/perl5/issues/18780
  https://github.com/Perl/perl5/pull/18984

If I am reading the source code correctly, an alternative to disabling
the warning would be specifying -DPERL_GCC_BRACE_GROUPS_FORBIDDEN but it
seems like that might end up impacting more than just this site,
according to the issue discussion above.

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 541f695cbc tools build: Use $(shell ) instead of `` to get embedded libperl's ccopts
Just like its done for ldopts and for both in tools/perf/Makefile.config.

Using `` to initialize PERL_EMBED_CCOPTS somehow precludes using:

  $(filter-out SOMETHING_TO_FILTER,$(PERL_EMBED_CCOPTS))

And we need to do it to allow for building with versions of clang where
some gcc options selected by distros are not available.

To pick the changes in:

  f6c6804c43 ("kvm: Move KVM_GET_XSAVE2 IOCTL definition at the end of kvm.h")

That just rebuilds perf, as these patches don't add any new KVM ioctl to
be harvested for the the 'perf trace' ioctl syscall argument
beautifiers.

This is also by now used by tools/testing/selftests/kvm/, a simple test
build succeeded.

This silences this perf build warning:

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 100198322b perf beauty: Make the prctl arg regexp more strict to cope with PR_SET_VMA
This new PR_SET_VMA value isn't in sequence with all the other prctl
arguments and instead uses a big, 0x prefixed hex number: 0x53564d41 (S V M A).

This makes it harder to generate a string table as it would be rather
sparse, so make the regexp more stricter to avoid catching those.

A followup patch for 'perf trace' to cope with such oddities will be
needed, but then its a matter for the next merge window.

The next patch will update the prctl.h file to cope with this perf build

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo f350ee9549 perf evlist: No need to setup affinities when enabling events for pid targets
When the target is a pid, not started by 'perf stat' we need to enable
the events, and in that case there is no need to setup affinities as we
use a dummy CPU map, with just one entry set to -1.

So stop doing it to avoid this needless call to sched_getaffinity():

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 49de179577 perf stat: No need to setup affinities when starting a workload
I.e. the simple:

  $ perf stat sleep 1

Uses a dummy CPU map and thus there is no need to setup/cleanup
affinities to avoid IPIs, etc.

With this we're down to a sched_getaffinity() call, in the libnuma
initialization, that probably can be removed in a followup patch.

Its convenient for when not using affinity setup/cleanup for dummy CPU

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 2eea0b56b0 perf evlist: No need to do any affinity setup when profiling pids
The cpumap is dummy, so no need to go on figuring out affinity.o

This way we reduce the setup time for simple scenarios like:

Addressing these tools/perf build warnings:

Now one can trace systemwide asking to see backtraces to where those
MSRs are being read/written with:

  # perf trace -e msr:*_msr/max-stack=32/ --filter="msr>=AMD_CPPC_CAP1 && msr<=AMD_CPPC_STATUS"

If we use -v (verbose mode) we can see what it does behind the scenes:

  New filter for msr:read_msr: (msr>=0xc00102b0 && msr<=0xc00102b4) && (common_pid != 2612102 && common_pid != 3841)

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 3d1d57debe tools build: Remove needless libpython-version feature check that breaks test-all fast path
Since 66dfdff03d ("perf tools: Add Python 3 support") we don't use
the tools/build/feature/test-libpython-version.c version in any Makefile
feature check:

  $ find tools/ -type f | xargs grep feature-libpython-version
  $

The only place where this was used was removed in 66dfdff03d:

  -        ifneq ($(feature-libpython-version), 1)
  - $(warning Python 3 is not yet supported; please set)
  -          $(warning PYTHON and/or PYTHON_CONFIG appropriately.)
  - $(warning If you also have Python 2 installed, then)
  -          $(warning try something like:)
  -          $(warning $(and ,))
  -          $(warning $(and ,)  make PYTHON=python2)
  -          $(warning $(and ,))
  - $(warning Otherwise, disable Python support entirely:)
  -          $(warning $(and ,))
  -          $(warning $(and ,)  make NO_LIBPYTHON=1)
  -          $(warning $(and ,))
  -          $(error   $(and ,))
  -        else
  -          LDFLAGS += $(PYTHON_EMBED_LDFLAGS)
  -          EXTLIBS += $(PYTHON_EMBED_LIBADD)
  -          LANG_BINDINGS += $(obj-perf)python/perf.so
  -          $(call detected,CONFIG_LIBPYTHON)
  -        endif

And nowadays we either build with PYTHON=python3 or just install the
python3 devel packages and perf will build against it.

But the leftover feature-libpython-version check made the fast path
feature detection to break in all cases except when python2 devel files
were installed:

  $ rpm -qa | grep python.*devel
  python3-devel-3.9.7-1.fc34.x86_64
  $ rm -rf /tmp/build/perf ; mkdir -p /tmp/build/perf ;
  $ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf install-bin
  make: Entering directory '/var/home/acme/git/perf/tools/perf'
    BUILD: Doing 'make -j32' parallel build
    HOSTCC  /tmp/build/perf/fixdep.o
  <SNIP>
  $ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
  In file included from test-all.c:18:
  test-libpython-version.c:5:10: error: #error
      5 |         #error
        |          ^~~~~
  $ ldd ~/bin/perf | grep python
	libpython3.9.so.1.0 => /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 (0x00007fda6dbcf000)
  $

As python3 is the norm these days, fix this by just removing the unused
feature-libpython-version feature check, making the test-all fast path
to work with the common case.

With this:

  $ rm -rf /tmp/build/perf ; mkdir -p /tmp/build/perf ;
  $ make -C tools/perf O=/tmp/build/perf install-bin |& head
  make: Entering directory '/var/home/acme/git/perf/tools/perf'
    BUILD: Doing 'make -j32' parallel build
    HOSTCC  /tmp/build/perf/fixdep.o
    HOSTLD  /tmp/build/perf/fixdep-in.o
    LINK    /tmp/build/perf/fixdep

  Auto-detecting system features:
  ...                         dwarf: [ on  ]
  ...            dwarf_getlocations: [ on  ]
  ...                         glibc: [ on  ]
  $ ldd ~/bin/perf | grep python
	libpython3.9.so.1.0 => /lib64/libpython3.9.so.1.0 (0x00007f58800b0000)
  $ cat /tmp/build/perf/feature/test-all.make.output
  $

Arnaldo Carvalho de Melo 66aee54ba4 perf beauty: Add socket level scnprintf that handles ARCH specific SOL_SOCKET
SOL_SOCKET has a different value according to the architecture, some
have it as 0xffff while all the others have it as 1, so a simple string
array isn't usable, add a scnprintf routine that treats it as a special
case, using the array for other values.

So the simple straight STRARRAY method is not enough as SOL_SOCKET is
'1' in most architectures but some use 0xffff (alpha, mips, parisc and
sparc), so a followup patch will create a specialized scnprintf to cover
that.
