commit6f33d58794("__UNIQUE_ID()") added a fallback definition of __UNIQUE_ID because gcc 4.2 and older did not support __COUNTER__. Also, this commit is effectively a revert of commitb41c29b052("Kbuild: provide a __UNIQUE_ID for clang") which mentions clang 2.6+ supporting __COUNTER__. Documentation/process/changes.rst currently lists the minimum supported version of these compilers as: - gcc: 5.1 - clang: 11.0.0 It should be safe to say that __COUNTER__ is well supported by this point. Linux kernel
============
There are several guides for kernel developers and users. These guides can
be rendered in a number of formats, like HTML and PDF. Please read
Documentation/admin-guide/README.rst first.
In order to build the documentation, use ``make htmldocs`` or
``make pdfdocs``. The formatted documentation can also be read online at:
https://www.kernel.org/doc/html/latest/
There are various text files in the Documentation/ subdirectory,
several of them using the Restructured Text markup notation.
Please read the Documentation/process/changes.rst file, as it contains the
requirements for building and running the kernel, and information about
the problems which may result by upgrading your kernel.
