[email protected] 9099184dec MAINTAINERS: refresh LLVM support
As discussed at the ClangBuiltLinux '23 meetup (co-located with Linux Plumbers
Conf '23), I'll be taking a step back from kernel work to focus on my growing
family and helping Google figure out its libc story. So I think it's time to
formally hand over the reigns to my co-maintainer Nathan.

As such, remove myself from reviewer for:
- CLANG CONTROL FLOW INTEGRITY SUPPORT
- COMPILER ATTRIBUTES
- KERNEL BUILD

For CLANG/LLVM BUILD SUPPORT I'm bumping myself down from maintainer to
reviewer, adding Bill and Justin, and removing Tom (Tom and I confirmed this
via private email; thanks for the work done Tom, ++beers_owed).

It has been my pleasure to work with everyone to improve the toolchain
portability of the Linux kernel, and to help bring LLVM to the table as a
competitor. The work here is not done. I have a few last LLVM patches in the
works to improve stack usage of clang which has been our longest standing open
issue (getting "rm" inline asm constraints to DTRT is part of that). But
looking back I'm incredibly proud of where we are to today relative to where we
were when we started the ClangBuiltLinux journey, and am confident that the
team and processes we have put in place will continue to be successful. I
continue to believe that a rising tide will lift all boats.

I identify first and foremost as a Linux kernel developer, and an LLVM dev
second. May it be a cold day in hell when that changes.

Wake me when you need me.

Nick Desaulniers a8306f2d4d compiler.h: unify __UNIQUE_ID
commit 6f33d58794 ("__UNIQUE_ID()")
added a fallback definition of __UNIQUE_ID because gcc 4.2 and older did
not support __COUNTER__.

Also, this commit is effectively a revert of
commit b41c29b052 ("Kbuild: provide a __UNIQUE_ID for clang")
which mentions clang 2.6+ supporting __COUNTER__.

Documentation/process/changes.rst currently lists the minimum supported
version of these compilers as:
- gcc: 5.1
- clang: 11.0.0
It should be safe to say that __COUNTER__ is well supported by this
point.

Nick Desaulniers c0bb9fb0e5 bpf: Fix BTF_ID symbol generation collision in tools/
Marcus and Satya reported an issue where BTF_ID macro generates same
symbol in separate objects and that breaks final vmlinux link.

  ld.lld: error: ld-temp.o <inline asm>:14577:1: symbol
  '__BTF_ID__struct__cgroup__624' is already defined

This can be triggered under specific configs when __COUNTER__ happens to
be the same for the same symbol in two different translation units,
which is already quite unlikely to happen.

Add __LINE__ number suffix to make BTF_ID symbol more unique, which is
not a complete fix, but it would help for now and meanwhile we can work
on better solution as suggested by Andrii.

Nick Desaulniers 3dae5c43ba x86/asm/bitops: Use __builtin_clz{l|ll} to evaluate constant expressions
Micro-optimize the bitops code some more, similar to commits:

  fdb6649ab7 ("x86/asm/bitops: Use __builtin_ctzl() to evaluate constant expressions")
  2fcff790dc ("powerpc: Use builtin functions for fls()/__fls()/fls64()")

From a recent discussion, I noticed that x86 is lacking an optimization
that appears in arch/powerpc/include/asm/bitops.h related to constant
folding. If you add a BUILD_BUG_ON(__builtin_constant_p(param)) to
these functions, you'll find that there were cases where the use of
inline asm pessimized the compiler's ability to perform constant folding
resulting in runtime calculation of a value that could have been
computed at compile time.

Nick Desaulniers a3c6bfba44 Documentation/llvm: refresh docs
Recent fixes for an embargoed hardware security vulnerability failed to
link with ld.lld (LLVM's linker). [0] To be fair, our documentation
mentions ``CC=clang`` foremost with ``LLVM=1`` being buried "below the
fold."

We want to encourage the use of ``LLVM=1`` rather than just
``CC=clang``. Make that suggestion "above the fold" and "front and
center" in our docs.

While here, the following additional changes were made:
- remove the bit about CROSS_COMPILE setting --target=, that's no longer
  true.
- Add ARCH=loongarch to the list of maintained targets (though we're
  still working on getting defconfig building cleanly at the moment;
  we're pretty close).
- Bump ARCH=powerpc from CC=clang to LLVM=1 status.
- Promote ARCH=riscv from being Maintained to being Supported. Android
  is working towards supporting RISC-V, and we have excellent support
  from multiple companies in this regard.
- Note that the toolchain distribution on kernel.org has been built with
  profile data from kernel builds.
- Note how to use ccache with clang.

Nick Desaulniers 90bae4d99b powerpc/xmon: Reapply "Relax frame size for clang"
This is a manual revert of commit 7f3c5d099b ("Revert "powerpc/xmon:

which is shorter.

Turns out that this is reproducible still under specific compiler
versions (mea culpa: I did not test every supported version of clang),
and even a few randconfigs bots found.

We'll have to revisit this again in the future, for now back this out.

It appears that when has_zero was introduced, two definitions were
produced with different signatures (in particular different return
types).

Looking at the usage in hash_name() in fs/namei.c, I suspect that
has_zero() is meant to be invoked twice per while loop iteration; using
logical-or would not update `bdata` when `a` did not have zeros. So I
think it's preferred to always return an unsigned long rather than a
bool than update the while loop in hash_name() to use a logical-or
rather than bitwise-or.

support for no_stack_protector but GCC did not. This was fixed in
gcc-11. Now that the function attribute is available, let's start using
it.

Callers of boot_init_stack_canary need to use this function attribute
unless they're compiled with -fno-stack-protector, otherwise the canary
stored in the stack slot of the caller will differ upon the call to
boot_init_stack_canary. This will lead to a call to __stack_chk_fail()
then panic.

commit d54170812e ("arm64: fix .idmap.text assertion for large kernels")
modified some of the section assembler directives that declare
.idmap.text to be SHF_ALLOC instead of
SHF_ALLOC|SHF_WRITE|SHF_EXECINSTR.

This patch fixes up the remaining stragglers that were left behind. Add

Nick Desaulniers 05107edc91 selftests: sigaltstack: fix -Wuninitialized
Building sigaltstack with clang via:
$ ARCH=x86 make LLVM=1 -C tools/testing/selftests/sigaltstack/

produces the following warning:
  warning: variable 'sp' is uninitialized when used here [-Wuninitialized]
  if (sp < (unsigned long)sstack ||
      ^~

Clang expects these to be declared at global scope; we've fixed this in
the kernel proper by using the macro `current_stack_pointer`. This is
defined in different headers for different target architectures, so just
create a new header that defines the arch-specific register names for
the stack pointer register, and define it for more targets (at least the
ones that support current_stack_pointer/ARCH_HAS_CURRENT_STACK_POINTER).

Chimera Linux is a Linux distribution from 2021 that builds its kernels

Google transitioned its data center fleet to run Clang built kernels in

These were important milestones for building the kernel with Clang.

Nick Desaulniers d5c8d6e0fa kbuild: Update assembler calls to use proper flags and language target
as-instr uses KBUILD_AFLAGS, but as-option uses KBUILD_CFLAGS. This can
cause as-option to fail unexpectedly when CONFIG_WERROR is set, because
clang will emit -Werror,-Wunused-command-line-argument for various -m
and -f flags in KBUILD_CFLAGS for assembler sources.

Callers of as-option and as-instr should be adding flags to
KBUILD_AFLAGS / aflags-y, not KBUILD_CFLAGS / cflags-y. Use
KBUILD_AFLAGS in all macros to clear up the initial problem.

Unfortunately, -Wunused-command-line-argument can still be triggered
with clang by the presence of warning flags or macro definitions because
'-x assembler' is used, instead of '-x assembler-with-cpp', which will
consume these flags. Switch to '-x assembler-with-cpp' in places where
'-x assembler' is used, as the compiler is always used as the driver for
out of line assembler sources in the kernel.

Finally, add -Werror to these macros so that they behave consistently
whether or not CONFIG_WERROR is set.

Nick Desaulniers 1d2e9b67b0 ARM: 9265/1: pass -march= only to compiler
When both -march= and -Wa,-march= are specified for assembler or
assembler-with-cpp sources, GCC and Clang will prefer the -Wa,-march=
value but Clang will warn that -march= is unused.

warning: argument unused during compilation: '-march=armv6k'
[-Wunused-command-line-argument]

This is the top group of warnings we observe when using clang to
assemble the kernel via `ARCH=arm make LLVM=1`.

Split the arch-y make variable into two, so that -march= flags only get
passed to the compiler, not the assembler. -D flags are added to
KBUILD_CPPFLAGS which is used for both C and assembler-with-cpp sources.

Clang is trying to warn that it doesn't support different values for
-march= and -Wa,-march= (like GCC does, but the kernel doesn't need this)
though the value of the preprocessor define __thumb2__ is based on
-march=. Make sure to re-set __thumb2__ via -D flag for assembler
sources now that we're no longer passing -march= to the assembler. Set
it to a different value than the preprocessor would for -march= in case
-march= gets accidentally re-added to KBUILD_AFLAGS in the future.

GCC and GNU binutils support setting the "sub arch" via -march=,
-Wa,-march, target function attribute, and .arch assembler directive.

Clang was missing support for -Wa,-march=, but this was implemented in
clang-13.

The behavior of both GCC and Clang is to
prefer -Wa,-march= over -march= for assembler and assembler-with-cpp
sources, but Clang will warn about the -march= being unused.

clang: warning: argument unused during compilation: '-march=armv6k'
[-Wunused-command-line-argument]

Since most assembler is non-conditionally assembled with one sub arch
(modulo arch/arm/delay-loop.S which conditionally is assembled as armv4
based on CONFIG_ARCH_RPC, and arch/arm/mach-at91/pm-suspend.S which is
conditionally assembled as armv7-a based on CONFIG_CPU_V7), prefer the
.arch assembler directive.

Add a few more instances found in compile testing as found by Arnd and
Nathan.

Nick Desaulniers 3220022038 ARM: 9256/1: NWFPE: avoid compiler-generated __aeabi_uldivmod
clang-15's ability to elide loops completely became more aggressive when
it can deduce how a variable is being updated in a loop. Counting down
one variable by an increment of another can be replaced by a modulo
operation.

For 64b variables on 32b ARM EABI targets, this can result in the
compiler generating calls to __aeabi_uldivmod, which it does for a do
while loop in float64_rem().

For the kernel, we'd generally prefer that developers not open code 64b
division via binary / operators and instead use the more explicit
helpers from div64.h. On arm-linux-gnuabi targets, failure to do so can
result in linkage failures due to undefined references to
__aeabi_uldivmod().

While developers can avoid open coding divisions on 64b variables, the
compiler doesn't know that the Linux kernel has a partial implementation
of a compiler runtime (--rtlib) to enforce this convention.

It's also undecidable for the compiler whether the code in question
would be faster to execute the loop vs elide it and do the 64b division.

While I actively avoid using the internal -mllvm command line flags, I
think we get better code than using barrier() here, which will force
reloads+spills in the loop for all toolchains.

Nick Desaulniers bce5a1e8a3 x86/mem: Move memmove to out of line assembler
When building ARCH=i386 with CONFIG_LTO_CLANG_FULL=y, it's possible
(depending on additional configs which I have not been able to isolate)
to observe a failure during register allocation:

  error: inline assembly requires more registers than available

when memmove is inlined into tcp_v4_fill_cb() or tcp_v6_fill_cb().

memmove is quite large and probably shouldn't be inlined due to size
alone. A noinline function attribute would be the simplest fix, but
there's a few things that stand out with the current definition:

In addition to having complex constraints that can't always be resolved,
the clobber list seems to be missing %bx. By using numbered operands
rather than symbolic operands, the constraints are quite obnoxious to
refactor.

Having a large function be 99% inline asm is a code smell that this
function should simply be written in stand-alone out-of-line assembler.

Moving this to out of line assembler guarantees that the
compiler cannot inline calls to memmove.

This has been done previously for 64b:
commit 9599ec0471 ("x86-64, mem: Convert memmove() to assembly file
and fix return value bug")

That gives the opportunity for other cleanups like fixing the
inconsistent use of tabs vs spaces and instruction suffixes, and the
label 3 appearing twice. Symbolic operands, local labels, and
additional comments would provide this code with a fresh coat of paint.

Finally, add a test that tickles the `rep movsl` implementation to test
it for correctness, since it has implicit operands.

Nick Desaulniers c67a85bee7 kbuild: add -fno-discard-value-names to cmd_cc_ll_c
When debugging LLVM IR, it can be handy for clang to not discard value
names used for local variables and parameters. Compare the generated IR.

-fdiscard-value-names:
  define i32 @core_sys_select(i32 %0, ptr %1, ptr %2, ptr %3, ptr %4) {
    %6 = alloca i64
    %7 = alloca %struct.poll_wqueues

-fno-discard-value-names:
  define i32 @core_sys_select(i32 %n, ptr %inp, ptr %outp, ptr %exp,
                              ptr %end_time) {
    %expire.i = alloca i64
    %table.i = alloca %struct.poll_wqueues
    %stack_fds = alloca [64 x i32]

The rule for generating human readable LLVM IR (.ll) is only useful as a
debugging feature:

$ make LLVM=1 fs/select.ll

As Fangrui notes:
  A LLVM_ENABLE_ASSERTIONS=off build of Clang defaults to
  -fdiscard-value-names.

  A LLVM_ENABLE_ASSERTIONS=on build of Clang defaults to
  -fno-discard-value-names.

Explicitly enable -fno-discard-value-names so that the IR always contains
value names regardless of whether assertions were enabled or not.
Assertions generally are not enabled in releases of clang packaged by
distributions.

Nick Desaulniers 32ef9e5054 Makefile.debug: re-enable debug info for .S files
Alexey reported that the fraction of unknown filename instances in
kallsyms grew from ~0.3% to ~10% recently; Bill and Greg tracked it down
to assembler defined symbols, which regressed as a result of:

commit b8a9092330 ("Kbuild: do not emit debug info for assembly with LLVM_IAS=1")

In that commit, I allude to restoring debug info for assembler defined
symbols in a follow up patch, but it seems I forgot to do so in

Dmitrii, Fangrui, and Mashahiro note:

  Before GCC 11 and Clang 12 -gsplit-dwarf implicitly uses -g2.

Fix CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_SPLIT for gcc-11+ & clang-12+ which now need -g

-gsplit-dwarf has been mutually exclusive with -g since support for
CONFIG_DEBUG_INFO_SPLIT was introduced in

I don't think it ever needed to be.

Nick Desaulniers b0839b281c Makefile.extrawarn: re-enable -Wformat for clang; take 2
-Wformat was recently re-enabled for builds with clang, then quickly
re-disabled, due to concerns stemming from the frequency of default
argument promotion related warning instances.

commit 258fafcd06 ("Makefile.extrawarn: re-enable -Wformat for clang")
commit 21f9c8a13b ("Revert "Makefile.extrawarn: re-enable -Wformat for clang"")

ISO WG14 has ratified N2562 to address default argument promotion
explicitly for printf, as part of the upcoming ISO C2X standard.

The behavior of clang was changed in clang-16 to not warn for the cited
cases in all language modes.

Add a version check, so that users of clang-16 now get the full effect
of -Wformat. For older clang versions, re-enable flags under the
-Wformat group that way users still get some useful checks related to
format strings, without noisy default argument promotion warnings. I
intentionally omitted -Wformat-y2k and -Wformat-security from being
re-enabled, which are also part of -Wformat in clang-16.

GCC has supported asm goto since 4.5, and Clang has since version 9.0.0.
The minimum supported versions of these tools for the build according to
Documentation/process/changes.rst are 5.1 and 11.0.0 respectively.

Remove the feature detection script, Kconfig option, and clean up some
fallback code that is no longer supported.

The removed script was also testing for a GCC specific bug that was
fixed in the 4.7 release.

Also remove workarounds for bpftrace using clang older than 9.0.0, since
other BPF backend fixes are required at this point.

Nick Desaulniers ffcf9c5700 x86: link vdso and boot with -z noexecstack --no-warn-rwx-segments
Users of GNU ld (BFD) from binutils 2.39+ will observe multiple
instances of a new warning when linking kernels in the form:

  ld: warning: arch/x86/boot/pmjump.o: missing .note.GNU-stack section implies executable stack
  ld: NOTE: This behaviour is deprecated and will be removed in a future version of the linker
  ld: warning: arch/x86/boot/compressed/vmlinux has a LOAD segment with RWX permissions

Generally, we would like to avoid the stack being executable. Because
there could be a need for the stack to be executable, assembler sources
have to opt-in to this security feature via explicit creation of the
.note.GNU-stack feature (which compilers create by default) or command
line flag --noexecstack. Or we can simply tell the linker the
production of such sections is irrelevant and to link the stack as
--noexecstack.

LLVM's LLD linker defaults to -z noexecstack, so this flag isn't
strictly necessary when linking with LLD, only BFD, but it doesn't hurt
to be explicit here for all linkers IMO. --no-warn-rwx-segments is
currently BFD specific and only available in the current latest release,
so it's wrapped in an ld-option check.

While the kernel makes extensive usage of ELF sections, it doesn't use
permissions from ELF segments.

Nick Desaulniers ac0dbed9ba net: seg6: initialize induction variable to first valid array index
Fixes the following warnings observed when building
CONFIG_IPV6_SEG6_LWTUNNEL=y with clang:

  net/ipv6/seg6_local.o: warning: objtool: seg6_local_fill_encap() falls
  through to next function seg6_local_get_encap_size()
  net/ipv6/seg6_local.o: warning: objtool: seg6_local_cmp_encap() falls
  through to next function input_action_end()

LLVM can fully unroll loops in seg6_local_get_encap_size() and
seg6_local_cmp_encap(). One issue in those loops is that the induction
variable is initialized to 0. The loop iterates over members of
seg6_action_params, a global array of struct seg6_action_param calling
their put() function pointer members. seg6_action_param uses an array
initializer to initialize SEG6_LOCAL_SRH and later elements, which is
the third enumeration of an anonymous union.

The guard `if (attrs & SEG6_F_ATTR(i))` may prevent this from being
called at runtime, but it would still be UB for
`seg6_action_params[0]->put` to be called; the unrolled loop will make
the initial iterations unreachable, which LLVM will later rotate to
fallthrough to the next function.

Make this more obvious that this cannot happen to the compiler by
initializing the loop induction variable to the minimum valid index that
seg6_action_params is initialized to.

Nick Desaulniers a6036a41bf kbuild: drop support for CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3
The difference in most compilers between `-O3` and `-O2` is mostly down
to whether loops with statically determinable trip counts are fully
unrolled vs unrolled to a multiple of SIMD width.

This patch is effectively a revert of
commit 15f5db60a1 ("kbuild,arc: add
CONFIG_CC_OPTIMIZE_FOR_PERFORMANCE_O3 for ARC") without re-adding
ARCH_CFLAGS

Ever since
commit cfdbc2e16e ("ARC: Build system: Makefiles, Kconfig, Linker
script")
ARC has been built with -O3, though the reason for doing so was not
specified in inline comments or the commit message. This commit does not
re-add -O3 to arch/arc/Makefile.

Folks looking to experiment with `-O3` (or any compiler flag for that
matter) may pass them along to the command line invocation of make:

$ make KCFLAGS=-O3

Code that looks to re-add an explicit Kconfig option for `-O3` should
provide:
1. A rigorous and reproducible performance profile of a reasonable
   userspace workload that demonstrates a hot loop in the kernel that
   would benefit from `-O3` over `-O2`.
2. Disassembly of said loop body before and after.
3. Provides stats on terms of increase in file size.

Nick Desaulniers e5d523f1ae ubsan: disable UBSAN_DIV_ZERO for clang
Building with UBSAN_DIV_ZERO with clang produces numerous fallthrough
warnings from objtool.

In the case of uncheck division, UBSAN_DIV_ZERO may introduce new
control flow to check for division by zero.

Because the result of the division is undefined, LLVM may optimize the
control flow such that after the call to __ubsan_handle_divrem_overflow
doesn't matter. If panic_on_warn was set,
__ubsan_handle_divrem_overflow would panic.

The problem is is that panic_on_warn is run time configurable. If it's
disabled, then we cannot guarantee that we will be able to recover
safely. Disable this config for clang until we can come up with a
solution in LLVM.

drivers/hwtracing/coresight/coresight-etm4x.h:81
 #define TRCSSCSRn(n)      (0x2A0 + (n * 4))

Where the macro parameter is expanded to i; a loop induction variable
from etm4_disable_hw.

When any compiler can determine that loops may be unrolled, then the
__builtin_constant_p check in read_etm4x_sysreg_offset() defined in
drivers/hwtracing/coresight/coresight-etm4x.h may evaluate to true. This
can lead to the expression `(0x160 + (i * 4))` being passed to
read_etm4x_sysreg_const_offset. Via the trace above, this is passed
through READ_ETM4x_REG, read_sysreg_s, and finally to __mrs_s where it
is string-ified and used directly in inline asm.

Regardless of which compiler or compiler options determine whether a
loop can or can't be unrolled, which determines whether
__builtin_constant_p evaluates to true when passed an expression using a
loop induction variable, it is NEVER safe to allow the preprocessor to
construct inline asm like:
  asm volatile (".inst (0x160 + (i * 4))" : "=r"(__val));
                                 ^ expected constant expression

Instead of read_etm4x_sysreg_offset() using __builtin_constant_p(), use
__is_constexpr from include/linux/const.h instead to ensure only
expressions that are valid integer constant expressions get passed
through to read_sysreg_s().

This is not a bug in clang; it's a potentially unsafe use of the macro
arguments in read_etm4x_sysreg_offset dependent on __builtin_constant_p.

This appears to be another LTO specific issue similar to what was folded
into commit 4b5305decc ("x86/extable: Extend extable functionality"),
where the `.set found, 0` in DEFINE_EXTABLE_TYPE_REG in
arch/x86/include/asm/asm.h conflicts with the symbol for the static
function `found` in arch/x86/kernel/pmem.c.

Assembler .set directive declare symbols with global visibility, so the
assembler may not rename such symbols in the event of a conflict. LTO
could rename static functions if there was a conflict in C sources, but
it cannot see into symbols defined in inline asm.

The symbols are also retained in the symbol table, regardless of LTO.

Give the symbols .L prefixes making them locally visible, so that they
may be renamed for LTO to avoid conflicts, and to drop them from the
symbol table regardless of LTO.

Nick Desaulniers bfb1a7c91f x86/bug: Merge annotate_reachable() into _BUG_FLAGS() asm
In __WARN_FLAGS(), we had two asm statements (abbreviated):

  asm volatile("ud2");
  asm volatile(".pushsection .discard.reachable");

These pair of statements are used to trigger an exception, but then help
objtool understand that for warnings, control flow will be restored
immediately afterwards.

The problem is that volatile is not a compiler barrier. GCC explicitly
documents this:

> Note that the compiler can move even volatile asm instructions
> relative to other code, including across jump instructions.

Also, no clobbers are specified to prevent instructions from subsequent
statements from being scheduled by compiler before the second asm
statement. This can lead to instructions from subsequent statements
being emitted by the compiler before the second asm statement.

Providing a scheduling model such as via -march= options enables the
compiler to better schedule instructions with known latencies to hide
latencies from data hazards compared to inline asm statements in which
latencies are not estimated.

If an instruction gets scheduled by the compiler between the two asm
statements, then objtool will think that it is not reachable, producing
a warning.

To prevent instructions from being scheduled in between the two asm
statements, merge them.

Also remove an unnecessary unreachable() asm annotation from BUG() in
favor of __builtin_unreachable(). objtool is able to track that the ud2
from BUG() terminates control flow within the function.

CONFIG_COMPAT_VDSO=y
$ ARCH=arm64 make -j72 LLVM=1 defconfig

for helping me with the patch archaeology.

According to Documentation/process/changes.rst, the minimum supported
version of binutils is 2.23. Since all supported versions of GAS support
this instruction, drop the assembler invocation, preprocessor
flags/guards, and the cross assembler macro that's now unused.

This also avoids a recursive self reference in a follow up cleanup

Similar to:
commit 8b8e6b5d3b ("kallsyms: strip ThinLTO hashes from static

It's very common for compilers to modify the symbol name for static
functions as part of optimizing transformations. That makes hooking
static functions (that weren't inlined or DCE'd) with kprobes difficult.

LLVM has yet another name mangling scheme used by thin LTO.

Combine handling of the various schemes by truncating after the first
'.'. Strip off these suffixes so that we can continue to hook such
static functions. Clang releases prior to clang-13 would use '$'
instead of '.'

Nick Desaulniers 41e76c6a3c nbd: use shifts rather than multiplies
commit fad7cd3310 ("nbd: add the check to prevent overflow in
__nbd_ioctl()") raised an issue from the fallback helpers added in
commit f0907827a8 ("compiler.h: enable builtin overflow checkers and
add fallback code")

ERROR: modpost: "__divdi3" [drivers/block/nbd.ko] undefined!

As Stephen Rothwell notes:
  The added check_mul_overflow() call is being passed 64 bit values.
  COMPILER_HAS_GENERIC_BUILTIN_OVERFLOW is not set for this build (see
  include/linux/overflow.h).

Specifically, the helpers for checking whether the results of a
multiplication overflowed (__unsigned_mul_overflow,
__signed_add_overflow) use the division operator when
!COMPILER_HAS_GENERIC_BUILTIN_OVERFLOW. This is problematic for 64b
operands on 32b hosts.

This was fixed upstream by
commit 76ae847497 ("Documentation: raise minimum supported version of
GCC to 5.1")
which is not suitable to be backported to stable.

Further, __builtin_mul_overflow() would emit a libcall to a
compiler-rt-only symbol when compiling with clang < 14 for 32b targets.

ld.lld: error: undefined symbol: __mulodi4

In order to keep stable buildable with GCC 4.9 and clang < 14, modify
struct nbd_config to instead track the number of bits of the block size;
reconstructing the block size using runtime checked shifts that are not
problematic for those compilers and in a ways that can be backported to
stable.

In nbd_set_size, we do validate that the value of blksize must be a
power of two (POT) and is in the range of [512, PAGE_SIZE] (both
inclusive).

This does modify the debugfs interface.

Nick Desaulniers 76ae847497 Documentation: raise minimum supported version of GCC to 5.1
commit fad7cd3310 ("nbd: add the check to prevent overflow in
__nbd_ioctl()") raised an issue from the fallback helpers added in
commit f0907827a8 ("compiler.h: enable builtin overflow checkers and
add fallback code")

Specifically, the helpers for checking whether the results of a
multiplication overflowed (__unsigned_mul_overflow,
__signed_add_overflow) use the division operator when
!COMPILER_HAS_GENERIC_BUILTIN_OVERFLOW. This is problematic for 64b
operands on 32b hosts.

Also, because the macro is type agnostic, it is very difficult to write
a similarly type generic macro that dispatches to one of:
 * div64_s64
 * div64_u64
 * div_s64
 * div_u64

Raising the minimum supported versions allows us to remove all of the
fallback helpers for !COMPILER_HAS_GENERIC_BUILTIN_OVERFLOW, instead
dispatching the compiler builtins.

arm64 has already raised the minimum supported GCC version to 5.1, do
this for all targets now. See the link below for the previous
discussion.

Nick Desaulniers f12b034afe scripts/Makefile.clang: default to LLVM_IAS=1
LLVM_IAS=1 controls enabling clang's integrated assembler via
-integrated-as. This was an explicit opt in until we could enable
assembler support in Clang for more architecures. Now we have support
and CI coverage of LLVM_IAS=1 for all architecures except a few more
bugs affecting s390 and powerpc.

This commit flips the default from opt in via LLVM_IAS=1 to opt out via
LLVM_IAS=0. CI systems or developers that were previously doing builds
with CC=clang or LLVM=1 without explicitly setting LLVM_IAS must now
explicitly opt out via LLVM_IAS=0, otherwise they will be implicitly
opted-in.

This finally shortens the command line invocation when cross compiling
with LLVM to simply:

$ make ARCH=arm64 LLVM=1

Nick Desaulniers 231ad7f409 Makefile: infer --target from ARCH for CC=clang
We get constant feedback that the command line invocation of make is too
long when compiling with LLVM. CROSS_COMPILE is helpful when a toolchain
has a prefix of the target triple, or is an absolute path outside of
$PATH.

Since a Clang binary is generally multi-targeted, we can infer a given
target from SRCARCH/ARCH. If CROSS_COMPILE is not set, simply set
--target= for CLANG_FLAGS, KBUILD_CFLAGS, and KBUILD_AFLAGS based on
$SRCARCH.

Previously, we'd cross compile via:
$ ARCH=arm64 CROSS_COMPILE=aarch64-linux-gnu- make LLVM=1 LLVM_IAS=1
Now:
$ ARCH=arm64 make LLVM=1 LLVM_IAS=1

For native builds (not involving cross compilation) we now explicitly
specify a target triple rather than rely on the implicit host triple.

We don't want compiler instrumentation to touch noinstr functions,

If an architecture is using noinstr, it should denote that via this

Nick Desaulniers 24845dcb17 Makefile: LTO: have linker check -Wframe-larger-than
-Wframe-larger-than= requires stack frame information, which the
frontend cannot provide. This diagnostic is emitted late during
compilation once stack frame size is available.

When building with LTO, the frontend simply lowers C to LLVM IR and does
not have stack frame information, so it cannot emit this diagnostic.
When the linker drives LTO, it restarts optimizations and lowers LLVM IR
to object code. At that point, it has stack frame information but
doesn't know to check for a specific max stack frame size.

I consider this a bug in LLVM that we need to fix. There are some
details we're working out related to LTO such as which value to use when
there are multiple different values specified per TU, or how to
propagate these to compiler synthesized routines properly, if at all.

Until it's fixed, ensure we don't miss these. At that point we can wrap
this in a compiler version guard or revert this based on the minimum
support version of Clang.

The error message is not generated during link:

Nick Desaulniers a554e740b6 x86/boot/compressed: Enable -Wundef
A discussion around -Wundef showed that there were still a few boolean

Kconfig doesn't define boolean configs, which can result in -Wundef

Nick Desaulniers 2515dd6ce8 stack: Replace "o" output with "r" input constraint
"o" isn't a common asm() constraint to use; it triggers an assertion in
assert-enabled builds of LLVM that it's not recognized when targeting
aarch64 (though it appears to fall back to "m"). It's fixed in LLVM 13 now,
but there isn't really a good reason to use "o" in particular here. To
avoid causing build issues for those using assert-enabled builds of earlier
LLVM versions, the constraint needs changing.

Instead, if the point is to retain the __builtin_alloca(), make ptr appear
to "escape" via being an input to an empty inline asm block. This is
preferable anyways, since otherwise this looks like a dead store.

While the use of "r" was considered in

  https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/202104011447.2E7F543@keescook/

it was only tested as an output (which looks like a dead store, and wasn't
sufficient).

Use "r" as an input constraint instead, which behaves correctly across
compilers and architectures.
